How will the way you feel affect any business you are going to do today?
Do you ever check to see what thoughts are running through your mind?
What is your frame of mind at this moment?
Is it positive or negative?
The answer you give is critical to both your professional and personal well-being and success.
We all have many challenges in life and know many people who are dragged down by depression and thoughts of self doubt, but few of us realise that it is our thinking that determines whether we are feeling great of feeling blue. Being aware of whether our thoughts are negative or positive can make an enormous difference to our lives and more particularly, how the way we feel can affect the outcome of our business success.
I have recently read an extremely interesting book: STOP THINKING, START LIVING by Richard Carlson (ISBN 978-0-7225-3547-9) which talks about this very subject & is what promoted this blog. It also links well with some other books I have read:
WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU TALK TO YOURSELF by Shad Helmstetter (ISBN 978-0-7225-2511-1) and
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING by Jeff Keller (ISBN 978-0-9790410-3-7).
In his book, Richard discusses the fact that thoughts are just things that float across our minds and unless we acknowledge them, focus on them or give them credence by dwelling on them, particularly if they are negative, they cannot hurt us or have any affect on our well-being.
I have also come to realise, through building my Network Marketing Business with Forever Living, that our limiting beliefs also have a great impact on our ability to achieve success. So, when I am working with Business Coaching and Speaker Training Clients in Pitch Perfect Presentations, I often use Mind Set as a gauge to assess where their limiting beliefs are set and help them to break through those limitations to achieve the success they are looking for. As we say in Forever Living:
"YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR LIFE IF YOU DON'T CHANGE YOUR THINKING!"
This saying is highly significant because it encapsulates everything that Richard Carlson talks about in his book. In the book, he talks about "choice points", which are moments when you choose whether you are going to follow an chain of thought and choose to follow it and how you will react to it or ignore it and let it pass.
How often have you caught yourself trundling off down a particularly negative thought chain, persuading yourself in your mind that some situation is actually much worse than it turns out to be in reality?
Things start to get really complicated when you begin to understand that our negative thoughts are often as a result of the largely negative programming many of us received in our childhood. Our thoughts continue to feed that negativity, reinforcing those beliefs, dragging us down and eroding our self-esteem, leading us into depression, unless we watch those thoughts, challenge them and stop believing them!
We must understand that it is the thoughts we have about a situation, not the situation itself, that creates the feelings you experience. How you react to your thoughts is what determines how you react to any situation.
Think about being cut-up when you are driving and how annoyed it makes you feel. The driver who cut you up, drives off without a care for what he has done, even if you had to brake quickly or swerve to avoid hitting him. Your thoughts about the incident may well be very angry and you may well feel justified in showing your frustration in some way.
The whole incident was over in seconds in reality, but if you are still angry about it 5 minutes or more later, then you have allowed your negative mind to dictate how you feel. yes, it is very annoying, but the only person still being affected is you! How does how you feel affect you if you are on your way to a business meeting with a client - new or established?
Are you going to give your best performance or are you going to lose a client if you are still fuming over something you can do nothing about? What a waste of energy!
When you really start to look into Mind Set and begin to understand that YOU must control your thoughts in order to ensure your own Well-Being and Happiness, it is easy to see the effect this will have on your business when you have to meet clients. It is also important to remember that like energy attracts like energy. Think about that the next time you have a bad day - what frame of mind were you in when things started to go wrong?
Can you see that it is very important to be able to change your thinking so that you project positivity in all aspects of your business?
No one wants to or will buy from a person who is projecting negativity!
My advice to you is to challenge those negative thoughts - are they true? Probably not, especially if your mind is telling you that "you aren't good enough" or " you can't do that". I bet you can find many examples to discredit those thoughts when you look at the successes in your life.
I'm not saying it is always easy to change your mind set, but I am saying that it is very important for your business success and overall well-being to be able to see and ignore those negative thoughts for what they are, just thoughts, and concentrate on happy thoughts instead!
