I believe Networking is an essential part of the marketing mix of the Small Business Owner. When done properly, it should expand your contacts and increase your business through referrals.
However, when it is done incorrectly, it can and will severely damage your reputation and have an adverse effect on your potential to expand your business. Unfortunately, we often see that when people don’t know how to do it well, fear & nerves take over and they stop going to meetings, consequently losing out on many potential opportunities.
WHY DO PEOPLE FEAR NETWORKING?
Many people fear networking and delivering the 60 second pitch because they don’t understand what networking is, how to do it well & are terrified of Public Speaking. However, when you analyse it, networking is really just about meeting new people and having conversations with them, just as you do in any other area of life – meeting friends socially, in a hobby club, or at the gym.
The focus in Networking is to build business relationships first. Business Contacts often become friends over time & you never know where your next great customer or client will come from so don’t let nerves or fear stop you from meeting great potential contacts.
WHY DO WE GET NERVOUS ABOUT OUR 60 SECOND PITCH?
Nerves are generally created by fear which comes from the negative inner voice we all have, it whispers to us that if we stand up and speak in front of all these people, (who we believe are so much better at this stuff than we are), we’ll make a fool of ourselves, look stupid & blow it so we should really just not go in the first place or stay quite & say nothing.
Even if you don’t do it very well at first, you should still make the effort to tell people about what you do. You can learn how to be great with a bit of coaching to improve your technique.
There is nothing wrong with nerves, they are part of what keep us feeling alive. It’s how you deal with the feelings they give you that is key to overcoming them. On a Pitch Perfect Presentations Course, you can learn quite quickly how to overcome that negative voice and present your business with great confidence.
After all, you came into business because you are very confident, knowledgeable about your subject and you are passionate about helping people to have a better experience by using your products/services, so why should you be shy about telling people how great you are?
