When you created your company, it was (and still is) because of YOUR vision of how YOU wanted things to be. Your company is an extension of you and the manifestation of your ideas (although we must remember that YOU and YOUR COMPANY are and should always be 2 separate entities – I’ll talk about that in another blog!). You created your company and took that giant leap of faith to become independent because you wanted to do things differently. If this isn’t the case, then why are you working for yourself and not just working in a traditional job helping to create someone else’s fortune?
As an Independent Business Owner, no matter how large or small your company is, it is YOU who people want to get to know. They will want to get to know more about YOU as a person as much as they will want to know about the services you offer. They will want to know WHY you took this road of independence together with all the challenges that brings & basically what makes you tick!
This is why it is most important that YOU talk about YOUR BUSINESS more than anyone else – even your staff, if you have any. Only YOU can really convey to people your knowledge and passion for what you do. This is why it is important to be able to talk about your business at any opportunity you get. Being confident at delivering Business Presentations is the best form of Marketing for your business! It is also essential for Client Briefings!
YOUR Business is Unique!
When people buy a service or product from an independent as compared to a big name company, they are usually looking for something unique, personal or at least very special service because they are almost certainly going to pay a little more for whatever they purchase. This is accepted practice because we know there is no way a local independent business can match the buying power of the big names. In addition of course, the beauty of a local independent company is that they usually have the flexibility to adapt to a customer’s needs that the big companies don’t have due to the restrictions they face through their production and focus on a limited range of products.
What we, as independent business owners, are able to offer is the flexibility to say YES! to a wide range of requests from customers. Many new innovative services & products have been created because someone said yes to an opportunity to deliver something new and help their customer, even though it may have only been one product that the start.
We need to celebrate this fact and demonstrate our versatility much more than we do and we should start reflecting this versatility in what we say when we talk about what we do!
So, How Do We Do This?
We have several opportunities to demonstrate
During the 60 Second Pitch
When we have a 1-2-1
During a 10 minute or longer Presentation Slot
I have seen many people fail to make the most of these opportunities because they really don’t understand the power of words and consequently I have seen people lose business because the opportunity was missed. Quite frankly it breaks my heart to see people who are, quite rightly, proud and passionate about their business, fail to promote themselves effectively, because they don’t understand the importance of talking about their business properly.
Pitch Perfect Presentations was created to help as many business owners as possible to be able to present their business with great confidence any time, any where, not just for 60 Seconds but for 10 minutes and more. The ability to talk about and present your business for longer than just 60 Seconds is so important because for most of us, there is no way we can inform people about the wider range of what we do in just one minute.
Our one minute slot (often now being reduced to just 30 Seconds!) can only be the very briefest of headlines and is used as a hook to get people to want to talk with you in more detail about what you do and how you can help them solve their problems or overcome their challenges in order for them to grow their business. Why wouldn’t you WANT to talk about your business in more detail? Yes, you can do this in a 1-2-1, but that is just talking to one person at a time. We need to be confident enough and able to talk to a room full of people to maximize our opportunities – you never know where your next great client or referral is coming from!
My clients are unique in their perspective and challenges, although they all have one thing in common – a fear of public speaking in some form or another, which holds them back from maximizing their opportunities and I find that working on the reason behind their fear is the main focus of my work. When we have cleared this blockage, it is simply a matter of teaching the techniques required to raise the voice, find or create the confidence within the client and bring everything together to create a highly effective pitch.
I work with clients, individually and corporate, both 1-2-1 and in groups, teaching Networking Skills and Confident Public Speaking Skills.
